I often see discussions on writing blogs about how much money you should make per word for your writing, often with 10 cents a word as a minimum. At surface value, you would assume that writing at 10 cents a word versus 5 cents a word would bring in double the income. Not necessarily true!
In my experience, you must always convert your price per word into per hour dollars to make a true comparison. If your 10 cents per word articles require a lot of up front time in research and interviews, before you write them and the 5 cents a word require half or one-third of the time per article, you will make more money on the lower rate.
Always compare payment with time spent and not just a per word rate.
