Lydia Davis is a 12-year-old who loves adventure, whether it comes from a stage, the front door of the house or the pages of a book. Her fictional reading and creative imagination have inspired her to write magical stories of her own. A Time to Rise, her first book, has yet to be published, but contains much of the same flavor as those books which she has enjoyed reading herself. Below are Lydia’s top three reading recommendations (written in her own words) for others who enjoy the adventurous life found in fictional chronicles.

1. The Wingfeather Saga by Andrew Peterson

This is my all-time favorite writer, Andrew Peterson, who is a Christian author and song writer.

The Wingfeather Saga is comprised of four books:

1. On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness
2. North or Be Eaten
3. The Monster in the Hollows
4. The Warden and the Wolf King

The story takes place in a place called Aerwiar. There’s lots of funny foot notes, crazy creatures, joy, sadness, and all sorts of emotion. The main characters are used to portray us as sinners trusting in God (or in this story, The Maker). There is a book that is referenced in the books that tells about creatures and what they look (and taste) like, called Pembricks Creaturepedia. Also an animated version is in the process of being made.

This is a good read for all ages. It is a good family read. But beware! It is very emotional; so have some tissues near. Some series start good but slowly get worse. But the Wingfeather Saga starts good and ends amazing! The series is also available on audio book. This series is a truly amazing read.

2. The Berinfell Prophecies by Wayne Thomas Batson

The Berinfell Prophecies is fantasy and adventure to the max. There are seven main characters. Each one is an elven lord who was captured at birth, then thrown on earth. They are rid of their pointy ears, so that they would blend in with the humans. Then elves travel to earth in search of the lost lords, and with the powers the lords are beginning to possess the time grows short. The evil Spider King searches for the young lords as well, but with the intent to kill, rather than bring back. As babies the elven lords were protected by an ancient curse, but now that they are beginning to mature, the curse will no longer protect them. This is a good read for your child that keeps running out of books to read and wants more.

3. Kingdom's Dawn by Chuck Black

Is fiction and fantasy your style read? If so, this is the book for you. It is a story about a boy named Leinad and a girl named Tess, whom Leinad’s father adopted. They are living happily on their farm, but one day that all changes. Leinad’s father is assassinated right in front of him by the most evil man in the Kingdom, the Dark Knight. Then the Vactor Deluge forces Leinad and Tess to leave their home and run to the mountains to escape. They find a farming town and get jobs at Master Stanton's farm. Tess works for Mrs. Stanton in the kitchens. Leinad works in the west field. Leinad is betrayed and sold to a slave traders caravan. Leinad is taken to Castle Pyron Mid to be a slave of Fairos, King of Nyland. Alone in bondage, Leinad worries for Tess because she is the sister he never had. Parents, consider this for a family read- aloud with your children. I highly recommend you read it and the other five books in its series. This exiting story keeps you on your toes at all times.
